Bovan Red Sex-links are a commercial grade egg layers which provide high peak production, and great laying persistency under all kinds of conditions. These birds are versatile and hearty for indoor, outdoor, and free-range applications. They are also known for there great feed conversion ratio meaning that they maximize egg production while minimizing feed consumption.
Our birds are reddish-brown in color with a white undercoat, they are also very calm and quiet birds. The Bovan Sex-link will produce large brown eggs and can lay throughout the year.
Our chicks are sourced from a major commercial hatchery, not backyard hatched to ensure our birds are the highest quality. Coming from the hatchery they are vaccinated against all common chicken diseases, and have been infrared beak trimmed. If you are concerned about the beak trimming be aware that this not the same as chicken debeaking. Beak trimming only removes the very tip of the beak leaving a rounded profile unlike the old hot knife method which leaves the birds with a major over and under bite. Beak trimming results in better heath of the flock over there lifetime as it reduces the stress caused by feather picking while not impacting the hens ability to eat or forage in a free range environment.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I know I am getting hens and not Roosters?
By the definition of our birds being Sex-links means that the Sex of the chick is linked to its color. In our breed Brown chicks are Females and Males are white. This makes sexing the chicks 100% guaranteed by the hatchery.
Will these bird lay eggs during the Winter?
Yes given the right light conditions your hens will continue to lay eggs through the winter. We recommend 16 hours of light throughout the year to keep the birds laying. In the winter months a single light bulb on a timer will be sufficient. You can however expect that during extreme cold the birds will stop laying.
Do you Recommend Feed for Laying Hens
Yes we recommend the 17% layer pellets from Richie Smith. Our Experience has shown this feed to be superior the Otter-Coops standard layer feed and its slightly cheaper. Bagged Richie Smith feed can be picked up at there processing facility in Abbotsford.
For Chicks up to 6 weeks old we recommend Otter-Coop Chick Starter 22% non-medicated
For Chicks up to 14 weeks old we recommend Otter-Coop Chick grower feed
Do Pullets require Heat lamps?
No after 6 weeks of age the Pullets do not require heat. They should however be kept and draft free enclosure
