I love this car and wanted one for many years. I had planned on restoring and turning this thing into a mad max inspired, off-road beast, perfect for all my post apocalyptic survival needs! Haha! Unfortunately, shortly after I bought it, we had to move from our home with shop and no longer had a decent location, or the funds to work on this beauty. Now we are moving out of town so it needs to go to someone who can love and restore her to her bad ass glory.
I WILL GIVE YOU ALL THE DETAILS SO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU MAY BE GETTING INTO
ENGINE – Runs well! Needs a jump start currently as the battery is dead. It’s an inline 6, basically the same as the jeep engines from the time, and many jeep parts are compatible with these engines. If you’re looking for parts at somewhere like Lordco, often they don’t have the AMC listed, but the same part may be found in their computer system under Jeep. – Just some useful info.
Has been sitting for a few years but run every few months. Recently replaced the starter solenoid when it wouldn’t start after sitting for a while, and it started right up after (with a jump)
Didn’t do a tonne of engine work in the time that I had it, as it didn’t need it. Distributor cap, plugs and wires were done by previous owner shortly before I bought it. I did fix the overheating issue. Coolant was full of rust and chunky crap. Replaced thermostat and ran a product called thorouflush through it, as well as a ton of water to flush and then replaced the coolant. I haven’t had an issue since.
I also replaced the fuel filter and added a cheap secondary filter before the proper one as the one it has in it was difficult to find and it has 2 outputs, so to try and avoid searching for this again (some parts for this old girl are difficult to find) the cheap one will filter out most debris and can be easily replaced.
SUSPENSION AND STEERING – It’s drivable as is but I was planning to overhaul pretty much the whole thing. I currently have all the tie rod ends, ball joints, AND a rebuilt steering gear, as well as some other parts, all brand new still in the boxes. All were special ordered from various suppliers in the US because I could not find them anywhere locally. These are all included in the price of the vehicle. I want them to go with it; I do not want to sell separately!
BODY AND FRAME – Mostly in good shape but yes there is some rust, It’s 40 years old! Mainly under the driver side rocker panel it is rusted through on the underside. This is the only spot I have seen completely rusted through. There is otherwise mild surface rust in other areas. There is also a crack in the front driver side inner fender, right where the brake line comes through (shown in pics) It looks like it was welded (poorly) previous to me owning it and that weld has since broken. I was told by a welder friend that it could be fixed fairly easily by grinding down the area and reinforcing with new metal. He had offered to do so for $200 at the time but has since moved away and I haven’t looked elsewhere for a quote. THE WHEEL WELLS HAVE BEEN MODIFIED, cut out to accommodate larger tires for off-roading, a very common modification to these vehicles. Which leads me to…
TIRES! – They’re old and definitely need to be replaced, 2 at least have slow leaks and will hold air for a few days. Perhaps enough to get it home if you don’t have far to go. The rims on it are jeep rims, these are a common swap for a larger tire on this thing as the original tires were pretty small. There is some rubbing still, particularly when turning corners, even with the cut out wheel wells. I have read that there is a spacer you can add in behind the rim to help with the rubbing but I haven’t researched this further. I also have a nicer set of jeep rims I was planning to replace these ones with that you’re welcome to if you want them.
IT IS PARTIALLY LIFTED – Lift kit was put in at the back, I have the rest of the lift kit parts for the front!
THE INTERIOR IS REALLY GOOD – Honestly for its age it is pretty great, the driver seat is the only rough spot with a couple tears right where you sit. The passenger seat and back seat are immaculate! The “trunk” area is also beautiful and still has the retractable vinyl cover in excellent condition. Dash and door interiors all look really good. The headliner is in good condition, no rips, but the old glue did release, and it was hanging down so it has been pinned up for now.
I HAVE THE ORIGINAL ROOF RACK - it needs to be repaired a bit and put back on top. I have the rubber gromets, or whatever they’re called, to reattach and seal up the holes that the roof rails attach too. I did it when I got the vehicle but I think at least one has popped out of place, but I have a small bag of replacements and I can show you how they work it you’re unaware (it was new to me)
I ALSO HAVE THE ORIGINAL REPAIR MANUAL - It’s a massive book with a tonne of detail, including electrical schematics. Much better than a haynes manual!
I have tried to include anything major here but of course there may be other small issues, I can fill you in on whatever I know if you come look. I admire honesty and I want this car to go to someone who WANTS to repair it, so I want you to know exactly what to expect here! However, I also know these are sought after collectables that are few and far between, and while this one does need some body work it is still in considerably good condition and well worth restoring. Please do not come to me with ridiculously low offers, I am not desperate to sell and it will not work on me! Feel free to reach out to ask questions and if you text me, we can arrange a time to talk on the phone if preferred.
